This ancient art dates back over 2,000 years originating as a means of ornamenting gourds used as eating and drinking vessels. Today, the tradition continues in the small village of Cochas, Peru. Three techniques are used. (1) Fondo Negro-etched with a small nail and then colored with soot and oil. (2)Quemado-etched and then burned with a small stick to provide the color tones. (3) Tintado-tinted with vegetable dyes and then carved. Many gourds tell a complete folk story or depict scenes symbolic of Andean mountain life. |
